DJs to Inspire You to Get Your Shuffle On,
From the standards and small group recordings of the era that did it best, to the new spin on old favorites in the present, we have much love for this music. After all, it’s the music that moves us. Saturday night’s social dance features djs with heart (and extensive mp3 libraries).
Hailing from Louisville, Kentucky, Emily Schuhmann’s been inspiring dancers to find their voice and connection with music that is as playful, spirited, intelligent, and conversational as she is!
She loves a good mix of tunes tailored to the event and the dancers from lindy to balboa, Charleston, lindy, and maybe even a spice of tra-jazz or jug. She’s been absolutely obsessed with vintage music, dance, and fashion since the early 2000’s and brings that passion for authentic voice to her song selections.
You’ll find her infectious smile and love of dance coming across on the floor and also adding a bounce to the music you’ll enjoy when she’s in the booth!
Kadie fell in love with jazz and the world of swing through her childhood obsession with old black and white movies from the 1930s and 40s. For her, music, especially jazz, is all about emotion and story telling and dancing is about getting the chance to express those emotions and stories through our bodies and experience them with another human being. Her music is filled with moody minor keys, passionate solos, energetic rhythms, mystery and most importantly, drama. Favoring swing tunes from the 1930s and 40s, some of her favorite musicians include Artie Shaw, Count Basie and Benny Goodman.
Jay Benze, our Neighbor to the North, co-founder of Gem City Swing in Dayton, and all around decent guy, is DJ-ing the band breaks at the Sunday Tea Dance. He has a good ear for music, he’s well travelled- from Herrang to the Experiment- and probably knows everybody.
He DJ’s and teaches all over the place. I gotta be honest, he didn’t give me a bio, I’m doing my best here. Ask him about his home improvement projects.
